Glasgow, Scotland (The Trial)
A co-comission and co-production with Music Theatre Wales, The Royal Opera & Theater Magdeburg
Kafka’s nightmarish tale of Joseph K, a man viciously persecuted for an unknown crime, has lost none of its chilling potency over the years. Now, iconic composer Philip Glass brings his signature style to this literary classic. Working with Academy Award-winning playwright Christopher Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons 1988), their new opera is brimming with drama, paranoia and Kafka’s notoriously absurd humour.
‘Philip’s music has an amazing theatrical energy and direction. It moves from an almost cabaret feel to menacing darkness, and the characters are fabulously entertaining.’
The superb ensemble cast includes Nicholas Lester (Don Pasquale 2014), Paul Carey Jones (Inés de Castro 2015) and three of Scottish Opera’s 2016/17 Emerging Artists. Michael McCarthy, Artistic Director of Music Theatre Wales, directs and Scottish Opera’s Head of Music Derek Clark conducts.
