“UK premiere, The Juniper Tree by Philip Glass and Robert Moran
The Helen Astrid Singing Academy are putting on two performances of The Juniper Tree, by Philip Glass and Robert Moran on 30th and 31st March 2017 at The Hammond Theatre, as part of the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames’ Music and Drama Festival.
These performances represent the UK premiere of the opera and coincide with Glass’s 80th birthday year. It has a magical libretto based on a Brothers Grimm fairy tale by Arthur Yorinks, author of 35 award-winning children’s books.
The cast will comprise young professional singers, talented children and local community singers. The opera will be a showcase for Mariya Krywaniuk, James Corrigan and Robecca Moon. Also singing is ten-year old Lia Tynan, who’s already made her Royal Opera House debt and Angus Whitworth, head chorister at the Chapel Royal.
Children from schools in the local area will take part alongside a community chorus backed up by some of the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames staff choir. The director is Donna Stirrup (Glyndebourne Festival Opera) and Andrew Langley who conducts a Royal College of Music ensemble. Set and Costume Design is by Laura Jane Stanfield and the opera is produced by Helen Astrid.”
