Karen Kamensek, conductor
Tora Augestad, mezzosoprano
Philip Glass: The Light
Anders Hilleborg … lontana in sonno …
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade
Tora Augestad is one of our most exciting singers, with a repertoire spanning cabaret, contemporary music and opera mm. A natural partner for an orchestra Orchestra. The Swedish composer Anders Hillborg wrote … lontana in sonno … in 2002, based on the poems of 1300 century poet Petrarch. These are poems written before and after Petrarch loved Laura’s death, and the work expresses in a wide gamut of vocal and timbral variations both longing and beautiful memories of a beloved person. Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korasakov may need no introduction as one of Romanticism’s core work, but if you need a reminder: These are adventurous and colorful music inspired by the 1001 Nights. The Light has just the light of inspiration. Philip glass’ the first thoroughbred orchestral work from 1887 was written 100 years after the pioneering Michelson / Morley experiment on light was conducted in Ohio.
It is with great pleasure we want Karen Kamenšek back as conductor for the second time this season after a very happy meeting with the orchestra last season.
