Koyaanisqatsi is the first film in director Godfrey Reggio’s Qatsi trilogy, for which the film score was composed by Philip Glass. Tonight, the Philip Glass Ensemble, founded by Glass himself, performs the film’s soundtrack live alongside the movie. Koyaanisqatsi is renowned for its groundbreaking use of time-lapse photography and slow-motion techniques to depict the frenetic pace of modern life and its impact on the natural world. Glass’ music for the film is considered one of the great masterpieces of the 1980s, an expansive minimalist work featuring synthesizers, deep male voices, and brass instruments.
