Le Lignon, Switzerland (In the Penal Colony)
September 6, 2019
Contemporary music specialists Ensemble Contrechamps will DARE TO HOPE together with the Grand Théâtre de Genève in the coming season. Hope means looking forward and daring to expe- rience music in the present tense, whether simple or complex, with our ears always open, whether to industrial noise or minimalist murmurs, and with our eyes always on the horizon.
We are pleased and proud to open our 2019/2020 season with a collaboration featured on the Festival La Bâtie 2019 programme, a chamber opera by the legendary Philip Glass, where a Contrechamps string quintet will dive into our stage and video installation of In the Penal Colony. The next step of the journey together will take us to the Swiss premiere of Matthew Shlomowitz’s Electric Dreams, as a feature of GTJ, the Grand Théâtre Junior audiences programme hosted by our neighbours of the Am Stram Gram youth theatre. And finally, as an introit to our production of Olivier Messiaen’s opera Saint François d’Assise, Contrechamps will fill Geneva’s St. Pierre Cathedral with the composer’s Trois Petites Liturgies de la présence divine, preceded by a work by Pauline Oliveros, a composer whose attachment to the concept of deep listening is a strong influence in contemporary music, and through which the audience will be led into the realm of spirituality so dear to the great French master.
