DESCRIPTION:January 29\, 2027 Mit Echnaton setzte Minimal-Music-Pionier Philip Glass einer der rätselhaftesten Persönlichkeiten der Weltgeschichte ein Denkmal. Barrie Kosky inszeniert den Aufstieg und Fall des Pharaos gleichermaßen bildschön wie bewegungsintensiv.  \nTheben um 1300 vor unserer Zeit: Amenophis III. ist tot. Sein Sohn Amenophis IV.\, der sich später Echnaton nennt\, wird zum König gekrönt. Der junge Pharao kündigt den Beginn einer neuen Ära an – er zerstört den Tempel der polytheistischen Religion der Amun-Priester und erklärt den Sonnengott Aton zur einzigen Gottheit. Doch Echnatons Herrschaft ist nicht von Dauer. Die Amun-Priester stellen die alte Ordnung wieder her\, und Echnaton wird als Begründer der ersten monotheistischen Religion gestürzt.  \nBarrie Kosky verzichtet in seiner Inszenierung auf ägyptische Referenzen.
