We’re excited to feature his music in the first of our 2026/27 New Dimensions concerts. \nConducted by David Brophy\, the programme opens with Richter’s Opus 2020\, a haunting meditation on time and memory that nods to Beethoven’s radical spirit. From there\, the music moves into the hypnotic clarity of Philip Glass’ Company\, its transparent textures and pulsing rhythms creating an atmosphere of meditative intensity\, before bursting into the rhythmic swagger of John Adams’ The Chairman Dances – a vibrant\, jazz-inflected foxtrot brimming with wit and movement. \nThe evening culminates with Richter’s celebrated Recomposed: Vivaldi – The Four Seasons\, where the ornamentation of the original is stripped away and rebuilt with shimmering sonorities and driving momentum. Throughout his long career\, Glass has drawn inspiration from poets’ words\, lives\, and the depths of their creative practice. Poetry has played a key role in the evolution of his music—from Rumi to Leonard Cohen—and\, in particular\, with one of Glass’s closest friends and collaborators: American beat poet Allen Ginsberg\, who posthumously celebrates his own centennial in 2026. For this program\, Philip Glass composed original works for Allen Ginsberg’s poems including “Wichita Vortex Sutra” and “Magic Psalm”. \nFeaturing performances by longtime Glass interpreter pianist Timo Andres\, theater artist Taylor Mac\, and members of the San Francisco Girls Chorus\, this evening celebrates not only these seminal American cultural icons\, but the spirit of collaboration across generations. \nNote: Philip Glass will not be performing. \nCo-commissioned by Pomegranate Arts and UCSB Arts and Lectures.
