SUMMARY:Dublin\, Ireland (Symphony No.8\, Ifé Songs\, Prelude & Dance from Akhnaten)
DESCRIPTION:https://www.nch.ie/all-events-listing/nsoi-philip-glass-explored-angelique-kidjo/ \nNSOI: Philip Glass Explored with Russell Davies & Kidjo \nNational Symphony Orchestra IrelandDennis Russell Davies\, conductorAngélique Kidjo\, voice \nPhilip GlassPrelude and Dance (‘The City’) from Akhnaten (Irish Premiere)Ifè Songs (Irish Premiere)Symphony No. 8 (Irish Premiere) \nNational Symphony Orchestra Ireland’s two-concert focus on Philip Glass begins with the composer’s most authoritative interpreter\, conductor Dennis Russell Davies\, and dynamic\, charismatic force of nature with a show-stopping voice\, Angélique Kidjo. \nHailed ‘Africa’s premier diva’ and one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine\, the multi-Grammy Award-winning Kidjo’s groundbreaking career has made her one of the most recognisable\, exciting and influential African artists of her generation. \nGlass’s own website declares ‘perhaps no person is closer to Philip Glass’s music-making than conductor Dennis Russell Davies’ who has premiered more of the composer’s works than any other conductor. \nThree Irish premieres include two passages from the landmark opera\, Akhnaten: the mesmerising Prelude and mounting intensity of Dance (‘The City’.) \nBased on African creation poems\, the Ifè Songs were composed for Angélique Kidjo and are sung in her native Yoruba. Named after a legendary kingdom\, each of the three songs evoke deities in colourful\, rhythmically complex music that fuses together Glass’s signature minimalist techniques with the inflections and phrasing of Yoruba chant and song. \nThe expansive Symphony No. 8 treats orchestral sections to virtuoso writing in three contrasting movements as daring as they are beautiful. The first\, weaving eight different themes into a compelling tapestry of colour and sound\, echoes Haydn and Beethoven; the second blends beauty and melancholy in compelling variations; the third dissolves into ‘deepening twilight and unending night’ (New Yorker). \nPresented by NCH

SUMMARY:Dresden\, Germany ("Aguas da Amazonia" - Metamorphosis)
DESCRIPTION:https://www.dresdnerphilharmonie.de/en/concerts-tickets/calendarschedule/amazonia/ \nAbout the Concert A whole cosmos of colors and sounds\, deep darkness and bright light\, original\, mysterious landscape – the largest forest area on earth: The wilderness of the Amazon in South America impresses with overwhelming beauty and biodiversity. Inspired by the nature of the rainforest and its fascinating facets\, the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos created a monumental symphonic cantata. From this work of their compatriot\, the conductor Simone Menezes has put together a suite\, which gains expressive power in the performance of the Dresden Philharmonic through images by the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. The impressive images of the world-famous photographer\, who passed away in May 2025\, not only show the fascination of the flora and fauna of the Amazon\, but also the dramatic consequences of human intervention in biodiversity. While the orchestra plays the music live\, Salgado’s images are shown on the big screen. As part of the Dresden Music Festival. \nProgram \nHeitor Villa-Lobos “Bachianas Brasileiras” No. 4 – Prelude \nPhilip Glass “Aguas da Amazonia” – Metamorphosis \nHeitor Villa-Lobos “Forest of the Amazon” – Suite \nArtistsSimone Menezes ConductorCamila Provenzale Dresdner Philharmonie

SUMMARY:Amsterdam (Akhnaten in Concert)
DESCRIPTION:https://www.concertgebouw.nl/concerten/8925673-akhnaten-van-philip-glass \n Akhnaten van Philip Glass \n Musici Radio Filharmonisch Orkest Groot Omroepkoor Karen Kamensek dirigent Benjamin Goodson koordirigent Anthony Roth Costanzo countertenor (Akhnaten)Chrystal E. Williams mezzosopraan (Nefertiti)Sarah Brady sopraan (Queen Tye)Benson Wilson bariton (Horemhab)James Kryshak tenor (Amon\, High Priest)Seth Carico bas-bariton (Aye)Zachary James bas (Amenhotep) \nKaren Kamensek dirigeerde Glass’ Akhnaten\, en Anthony Roth Costanzo zong de titelrol in de Met.

He reunites with Glass specialist and muse\, Maki Namekawa\, to reprise their acclaimed 2023 world premiere of the Mishima Piano Concerto for its Irish debut. Crafted from the haunting soundtrack to the 1985 film\, it retains its hypnotic\, cinematic qualities while giving the piano a central\, virtuosic role. \nThe Light\, Glass’s first score for a full symphony orchestra\, and the Interlude from his opera\, The Voyage\, also receive Irish premieres. \nPresented by NCH

SUMMARY:Geneva\, Switzerland (8 Sonneurs pour Philip Glass)
DESCRIPTION:https://lacitebleue.ch/en/evenement/8-sonneurs-pour-philip-glass/?utm_medium=display&utm_source=bachtrack.com&utm_campaign=listinglink \nWhat if bagpipes\, binious and bombards were the ideal instruments for performing Philip Glass’s music? That is the daring and fascinating challenge taken up by this unique show. \nWith 8 SONNEURS pour Philip Glass\, the legendary repertoire of the American composer and pioneer of minimalist music takes on a whole new dimension: his four iconic pieces written in 1969 (Two Pages\, Music in Fifths\, Music in Contrary Motion\, Music in Similar Motion) are reinterpreted here by traditional Breton musicians. \nThe result? A striking alchemy of sound where the richness of the timbres\, the continuous drone and the spatialisation of the sound transform the listening experience. Glass’s music becomes living\, vibrant\, almost hypnotic matter\, proving that Philip Glass’s spirit resonates just as powerfully in the vibrations of a drone as in the chips of a synthesiser.

SUMMARY:London\, United Kingdom (Ballet: Tirol Concerto)
DESCRIPTION:https://www.rbo.org.uk/tickets-and-events/so-are-we-leon-and-lightfoot-details \nSo Are We: León and Lightfoot11–20 June 2026Main StageBallet and dance \nTwo works of deep feeling and yearning by the acclaimed contemporary choreographic duo. \nThe works of Sol León and Paul Lightfoot have a uniquely characteristic movement language that is fluid yet angular\, soft and weightless yet simmering with tension. Their choreography has been performed all over the world\, most notably by Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT)\, where León and Lightfoot were house choreographers from 2002-20. They have created over 50 works for the Dutch contemporary company. \nShoot the Moon\, celebrating its 20th anniversary\, explores relationships and the solitude that lies within them. The work is scored by Philip Glass‘s shifting tonal melodies within his Tirol Concerto. \nSTANDBY\, originally choreographed as a film by Lightfoot during the pandemic in homage to the balletic art form\, will now be recreated by the duo as a world premiere for the Company. Drawing on a dancer’s daily study of ballet class\, Leon and Lightfoot reimagine it with their uniquely fluid choreographic passion\, sometimes integrating whispers of another reality. A freshly composed score by Ilya Demutsky will accompany the ensemble on the bare stage of the Royal Opera House.
