SUMMARY:London\, UK (Music in 12 Parts)
DESCRIPTION:January 30\,2027 \nRiot Ensemble becomes only the third ensemble in history to perform Philip Glass’ wild four-hour work\, an epic recap of minimalist style. Part of Classical Season – Autumn/Winter 2026/27 Alternative Experiences Contemporary Edit \nOn the eve of Glass’ 90th birthday\, Riot Ensemble becomes only the third ensemble in history to perform Music in 12 Parts\, which Glass himself called ‘the end of minimalism’. \nThe four-hour precursor to Music for 18 Musicians\, it has been performed outside the Philip Glass Ensemble exactly once. \nTrue to their commitment to finding the cutting edge of music from every decade\, Riot Ensemble is proud to revive the work in Glass’ 90th year. \nWritten between 1971 and 1974\, Music in 12 Parts is Glass’ encyclopedic summation of everything minimalism could do followed by its deliberate demolition. \nIt began as a single piece; a friend’s misunderstanding of the title convinced Glass to write 11 more parts over three years. \nThe result is a four-to-five-hour evening-length event for nine players: keyboards\, winds\, saxophone and voice. Simultaneously gentle and ferocious\, methodical and playful\, the work is already a complete table of contents of Glass’ signature style. \nThe work marked Glass’ transition from austere early minimalism into a far wider range of expression\, ending audaciously with a 12-tone row\, as though Glass had invented a system\, written through it\, and come out the other end. \nFind out more: https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/philip-glass-at-90-music-in-12-parts/More details for The Clore Ballroom\, Level 2\, Royal Festival HallTickets from £35 + £4 booking fee View more time and price informationRun time 5 hours (approx)

SUMMARY:London\, UK (Symphony No.15 "Lincoln")
DESCRIPTION:January 31\, 2027 \nThe first UK performance of Glass’ powerful new symphony\, inspired by Abraham Lincoln and the enduring importance of democratic values. \nPhilip Glass has forged an unmistakable musical language over more than six decades\, built on repetition\, clarity and cumulative emotional power. \nWritten in 2022\, the Symphony No.15 is one of Glass’ most recent large-scale works. Inspired by Abraham Lincoln’s Lyceum Address\, the Symphony considers questions of democracy\, law and civic responsibility. \nIt has already made headlines after the composer’s decision to withdraw its premiere performance from the newly renamed Trump Kennedy Center\, underlining the work’s contemporary relevance. \nPresented on the day of the composer’s 90th birthday\, as part of a four-concert celebration of Glass’ music\, this performance offers a chance to hear an important new work by a composer whose music continues to compel audiences around the world. \n Find out more: https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/whats-on/philip-glass-at-90-symphony-no-15/ \nPerformers \n to be announced concert orchestra\, conductor\, baritone \nRepertoire \n Programme includes: – \n Philip Glass: Symphony No.15 for baritone & orchestra (UK premiere)
