The Week Ahead – London, Pittsburgh and ‘Paging Dr.Glass’

Tonight, the Basel Symphony Orchestra, which is soon releasing its first album with OMM (a new recording of Glass' Symphony No.1 "Low") begins its tour in the UK under its Music Director Dennis Russell Davies.  The programs include music by Philip Glass (Anniversary Concert Overture (Overture for 2012) in its Euro Premiere, Cello Concerto No.2 "Naqoyqatsi" and Symphony No. 6 "Plutonian Ode"), John Adams, Michael Nyman, and Arvo Part.

Davies discussed the tour and Minimalism in general with The Telegraph UK.  The Arts Desk gives its two bits about the Basel Orchestra's Tour.

The LA TImes reviewed the LA Philharmonic's big production of the CIVIL WARS: ACT V – The Rome Section at Disney Hall as part of the Minimalist Jukebox. It was also covered by the San Bernadino Sun

This Saturday, Orphée begins a run at Pittsburgh Opera. I think the composer might attend. This is the same production that was recrded at Glimmerglass Opera in NY before being done in Virginia and Portland (where it was recrded by OMM). After 21 years Orphée is finally gaining momentum.

And next month, Glass' alma mater, The Juilliard School will award honorary doctorates to prominent artists including Philip Glass, Joyce DiDonato, Marcus Roberts, Viola Davis and Lar Lubovitch, as well as architecht Frank Gehry and philanthropists Bruce and Suzanne F. Kovner, during its 109th Commencement Ceremony on May 23 at 11:00 a.m.
