Minimal music is no longer a marginal phenomenon in classical concerts, and this is due in no small part to Philipp Glass, one of the most dedicated and successful composers of this musical style. He wrote his Concerto for Two Pianos for the two soloists of the evening, the sisters Katia and Marielle Labèque. It’s no wonder, as he believed the concerto would only work if “played with one brain.” Of course, it’s not quite like that, but the almost symbiotic connection between the two artists in their shared performance can be experienced live on this evening. His Sixth Symphony was simultaneously the last one Tchaikovsky wrote. Nine days after its completion, he passed away. To this day, there is speculation about whether he committed suicide, was poisoned, or died a natural death. However, there is no speculation about what we hear in his music today: courage and optimism at the beginning, through disappointment to resignation and almost complete fading at the end.
