The House of Usher

I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to call attention to it before it happened, but the enterprising Opera Vista out of Houston performed Glass' chamber opera based on Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher, appropriately in front of the estate house of Ima Hogg in Bayou Bend.  I've never had the chance to see Usher despite its modest scale and frequency of production.

Also down south in Mobile Alabama, the Mobile Symphony performs (again) the first Glass Violin Concerto. It appears they performed it somewhat recently, way back in 2005 with Tim Fain.  The soloist this time around is Bella Hristova, the young Bulgarian violinist.

And coming up this weekend, Philip Glass goes to Cincinatti to begin his Residency with the Cincinatti Symphony (its season opener is called "Boom Boom, Pow! and features Glass' Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists) as well as be present at his induction to the Classical Music Hall of Fame.
