Review Weekend: New Concerto, Orphée, DANCE, & Penal Colony

A number of reviews came in over the weekend including a fairly complimentary one for the new violin concerto which includes the statement from the Buffalo News "Philip Glass’ new violin concerto is the most beautiful music, by far, to come from him in at least a decade."  I'm not sure I agree with that, but whatever, the CD is already at the No.58 position on the iTunes Classical charts, a full month in advance of its release.

The Albany Times Union reviewed the new recording of Orphée positively though they lament that the recording wasn't done with the original performances of the Helfrich production. It's pretty much the same cast. I'm happy companies would consider it an honor to make the first recordings of these operas.

This last weekend's performances of DANCE in Philadelphia were very well received and here.

And the Music Theatre of Wales prepares for the launch of their "Penal Colony" tour.   Here is a very good interview done by the Telegraph with Philip Glass on the opera.

Philip Glass is at the French Institute/Alliance Francaise tonight speaking with Mattieu Ricard.
