For the longest time, not a single Philip Glass opera, not even the small practical ones, were performed in Southern California. That's now changing, largely thanks to the pioneering Long Beach Opera company and its director Andreas Mitisek. The company has now produced three Glass operas in recent seasons. In addition to this, the LA Opera has committed to presenting "Einstein on the Beach" next season. This makes for quite a bit of Glass in SoCal, especially when one considers the role of the LA Philharmonic which has presented/commissioned two Qatsi film arrangements done at the Hollywood Bowl and the commission of the Glass Ninth Symphony last year, add on to that the recent Pacific Symphony Glass Festival and SoCal is nowadays the next best place to NYC to hear Glass' music.
